Hsin Chong was recently awarded a landmark contract for the main construction work of M+ Museum, Hong Kong’s new museum for visual culture, located in the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD). As a flagship project, the construction of M+ Museum underscores the vital role of Hsin Chong in supporting the growth of this multifaceted city.
On December 9, the Main Works Commencement Ceremony took place at the M+ Museum site in the WKCD. Mr. Duncan Pescod, CEO of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, and Ir Joseph Choi, Executive Director and CEO of Hsin Chong Construction Group, together with the management of both parties, were present. The officiating guests filled an acrylic box in the shape of the M+ logo with sand, signifying the commencement of the superstructure of the museum building. There were also toasts and a bai san ceremony to wish the project success.
Occupying an area of approximately 60,000 square metres, the upcoming M+ Museum will be situated in the centre of the WKCD, adjacent to WKCD Park. The new museum will be housed in an innovative structure designed by the award-winning Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron together with the Hong Kong firm TFP Farrells and Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong.
Comprising a semi-transparent vertical tower supported by a horizontal podium, M+ Museum will house research and curatorial centres, along with a range of retail, entertainment and dining facilities in its top floors, while the podium levels will host a diverse array of exhibition spaces and galleries. The ground and basement levels will be home to a learning centre, a moving image centre, creator’s studios and further retail and dining options.
The project’s main work commenced in October. With completion scheduled for late 2018, M+ Museum will form an important new chapter in Hsin Chong’s journey of growth, strengthening the close ties it shares with the city of Hong Kong.
